Washington County is located in the panhandle of Florida just north of Panama City. It has a population of around 25,000, and the county seat is Chipley. The county was formed in 1825 from Jackson and Walton Counties. It gets its name from the first President of the United States, George Washington.
At the time of the county’s creation, Washington County was much larger than it is today. It reached all the way to the gulf, encompassing the area that is now Panama City. Today, the county has an area of 580 square miles all of which is steeped in history. Proud of being named after Washington, the area features the town of Vernon which honors the President’s first home. The area has been home to many different people from Native Americans to Europeans, and evidences of these cultures still exist today.
The county is a vibrant and growing community, with many people discovering the delights that it has to offer, there has been a steady upsurge in population, which helps to boost the economy. Nevertheless, there is still an abundance of small towns and countryside homes that escape the bustle of nearby cities and towns. Washington is an ideal place to raise children due to its excellent schools and community wide emphasis on family.
