Dixie County, Florida, is a small county located in the northern half of the state bordering the Gulf of Mexico. The county has an area of 704 square miles, and a population of roughly 16,500. The county seat is Cross City.
Dixie County was created in 1921 from Lafayette County. The name tips its hat to the nickname that is often used to refer to southern states in the United States. It is said, although some sources disagree, that the name came from a “Mr. Dixy” who was a slave owner in Manhattan Island. According to stories, the man was so kind to his slaves that it prompted the song “I Wish I was in Dixie’s Land.” The song was widely used throughout the Civil War, especially by the Confederate Army.
In addition to its rich history, Dixie County has a high quality of life. The area is home to many bays and inlets that offer recreation for the whole family. The Dive City of Hawkinsville is also located in this area. Hawkinsville is an underwater state park where many people come each year to go on SCUBA trips to see the vibrant life that exists beneath the surface of the water.
The county offers nearly every outdoor recreation that you can imagine. Hiking, fishing, scalloping, canoeing, and horseback riding are just a few of the activities that Dixie County offers. In addition, there are many friendly communities that feel like home the instant you enter their boundaries.
